Welcome to the Big Bear Valley Democratic Club!
Deep in the heart of the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California lies a little valley struggling to become blue. Big Bear Valley is a beautiful mountain resort. However, we lie right smack in the middle of red territory! Your donations and/or time can help us reach out to other Democrats and help make this valley once and for all the color it should be - blue!!! DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE VICTORY Sunday 31 August 2008 - 21:55:44 GO OBAMA AND BIDEN! What a convention we have just witnessed! The Democratic Party Convention in Denver this week was arguably the best political convention ever staged in the United States, at least in recent memory. For the first time in history the party placed into nomination for president an American of African decent, who at the end of the week, won the unqualified support of the first female contender to garner over 18 million votes in the primaries and caucuses all across this great land. This is truly an historical moment we have just experienced, as it represents how far we have come as a people in banishing from our land the scourge of racism and sexism. These are giant steps forward in pursuit of the American dream set forth by our founding fathers, that all men (and women) are created equal and should be accorded the same rights to pursue their goals without regard to their gender, their religion, or the color of their skin. Most of the credit goes to the candidates themselves--Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton--but also to the Democratic Party as well as the millions of ordinary citizens who have supported the Democratic Party nominees. Here is an inspiring statement that appeared in the Asian Tribune (www.asiantribune.com) , an international newspaper dedicated to "a world without war, destruction and destruction -- both state and terrorist orchestrated" Referring to the nomination of Barack Obama the Asian Tribune had this to say: " "The nomination of Barrack Obama has given a much needed boost for American credibility, American image and American self-confidence. It has done more to undermine America’s critics and opponents than an entire military campaign." Asian Tribune - This statement may well be an indication of world opinion concerning the Obama nomination and portends a very bright future for America when Americans elect Presidential Nominee Barack Obama to be the next president of the United States of America. There is still much work to do, especially in the next two months leading up to the General Election in November. The Democratic Club pf Big Bear Valley wants very much to do its part to ensure a victory for Barack Obama and Joe Biden, as well as for the Democrats who are running for state and local offices. To that end, the program for the September General Meeting is designed to help citizens be more effective in the political process. The Club will hold its meeting on Tuesday, September 2, at 6:30 p.m. in the BBARWA Meeting Hall. The program will be given by Ms. Sandy Steers, of Fawnskin, who will share many ideas on how to be an effective advocate for causes we believe in, especially issues concerning the impact on the environment caused by economic development. All are welcome to this meeting and all club meetings every month. August Meeting Tuesday 08 July 2008 - 21:17:40 DEMOCRATS MEETING --TUESDAY, AUGUST 5TH, 6:30 IN THE BBARWA MEETING HALL, 122 Palomino Drive, Big Bear City (Near Irwin Lake) Presenting Mr. Carl Wood Democrat running for Californiia State Assembly from the 65th AD. Mr. Wood will speaking on the topic: The Energy Crisis--Myths and Realities He will also address other issues of concern to Californians. After his presentation there will be a Question and Answer period when members of the audience may ask any question relative to Mr. Wood's candidacy, qualifications, and position on issues. This meeting affords the community the opportunity to meet and get to know the Democratic candidate opposing the incumbent Republican in the November election. He has long and significant experience in business, labor unions, and California regulatory commission work. Apppointed in 1999 by Governor Gray Davis to a six-year term on the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) where he established a good reputation for his efforts to stabilize and re-regulate California's electrical utility industry during and after the 200=2001 Energy Crisis, and for his authorship of the Telecommunications Consumer Bill of Rights. From Carol Robb, Chairperson of the San Bernardino County Democratic Central Committee: Thanks to Patrick Kahler for once again doing the math (isn't it great to have a math teacher around to do this stuff!). The gap is down to 1,330! Democratic Registration is now at 300,435. Carol Robb SBCDCC Chair Voter Registration by Party SB Countywide Summary DEM 300,435 39.34% REP 301,765 39.52% NP 133,100 17.43% Others: 28,31 13.71% Total 763,611 Difference Between REP and DEM-1,330 But despite the county-wide good news, the figures out of Big Bear remain about at their historical level: DEM: 796 25.5% REP: 1715 55% NP: 478 15.3% In other words, the ratio of registered Republicans to registered Democrats is about 2 to 1. This remains as a "call to arms" for Democrats to continue vigorously to register new voters and at election time to ensure that all Democrats and swing voters get to the polls in November. ********************* And now, a summary of the July meeting. The Big Bear Valley Democratic Club met on July 1st to discuss many current events, issues, and candidates running for public office in the General Election in November. Councilman Michael Karp reported on a number of items on the Big Bear Lake City agenda, such as future commercial development in the City, as well as a proposal to build low-income housing in the Village. These issues will be coming up again soon when the public will have the opportunity to submit oral and written comments. The club learned about MOE (Mobilize - Organize - Elect), a computer data base now available to the California Democratic Party, that makes it very easy for volunteers working for candidates to target selected voters. A great new 21st century tool! The program for the evening was titled: "Why John McCain May Win in November", and was designed to alert Democrats to the challenge posed by the Republican candidate for President. Senator Obama, the presumptive nominee, cannot be seen at this point as a shoo-in, as a certain an easy winner. Democrats have their work cut out for them and must be ready to step up, unite behind their candidate, counter with the truth smears and slurs on the internet and elsewhere, register new voters, and do everything we can to get Democrats to the polling places on Election Day. The Story of Stuff, a 20 minute video written and produced by Annie Leonard explains how modern society has become utterly dependent on ever increasing consumerism for its very survival. We learn the five steps involved in modern economies: Extraction (of Natural Resources), Production Distribution Consumption Disposal a linear system of the largest economies on the planet. Following the film we will discuss the implications of an ever growing consumer society and what the alternatives are. DON'T MISS THIS MEETING! It is guaranteed to be an entertaining and informative way of spending a Tuesday evening. ELECTION RESULTS Wednesday 04 June 2008 - 11:57:59 TIM PRINCE WINS! The Riverside Press Enterprise reports that as of 7 a.m. Wednesday morning, Tim Prince has won the race for the Democratic Party candidate for Congress from the 41st Congressional District, beating out the other three contenders by a hefty margin. With 100 % of princincts reporting, these are the numbers:
Many of us in the BBV Democratic Club worked long and hard for Pat Meagher and feel saddened that he did not win the primary election. As we reported earlier on this website, the Club voted overwhelmingly to endorse Mr. Meagher. He's a fine man--honest as the day is long, passionate about helping others, dedicated to the causes we hold dear. He's got a great future ahead of him if he still has the will and the energy to keep on making a huge difference in the lives of others. Thank you, Pat, for being who you are! And Rita Ramirez-Dean also holds a special place in our hearts. Like Pat she has come to Big Bear several times to speak to the community about local and national issues during this campaign and also two years ago when she ran for the California State Assembly. We also appreciate her efforts to make a difference in our lives. In another local election many people in the Big Bear Valley will be happy to see that Neil Derry beat out Dennis Hansberger for San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors. Here are the results as reported in the Press Enterprise at 7:01 a.m. Votes Percentage Neil Derry 18,222 52.37 % Dennis Hansberger 16,574 47.63 % GET OUT THE VOTE! Monday 02 June 2008 - 16:41:12 DEMOCRATS GO VOTE! California Primary Election Day, June 3rd, 2008 Over the lo ast two months before the deadline, more people in San Bernardino County registered to vote on the Democratic Party ballot than ever before, virtually closing the historic wide gap that had existed between the two major parties for a long time. The County now is virtually a blue county, making history in the annals of California politics. Now it's time for all registered Democrats to get out and exercise their precious right to vote in the Primary Election. Go do it! It only takes a minute. The polls open at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, June 3 and stay open until 8 p.m. The Big Bear Valley Democratic Club made these endorsements at its last meeting and urge you to vote for these candidates: Mr. Pat Meagher, for Congress from the CA 41st Congressional District Mr. Carl Wood, for the California 65th Assembly District. The Club strongly urges a "No" vote on Proposition 98 and a "Yes" vote on Proposition 99. So, get out the vote. It's soooooo important that our voices be heard! Dan Fowlks Speaks at the Club Meeting in May Monday 28 April 2008 - 21:12:01 DEMOCRATIC CLUB HOSTS DAN FOWLKS AT ITS MAY MEETING Like most places in Southern California Big Bear Valley is facing a looming water crisis. A burgeoning population is quietly but persistently making demands for cleaner, pure water in homes and businesses. The community discussion over recycled wastewater as another source for potable water won’t go away. Mr .Dan Fowlks, a part time resident of Big Bear and a well-informed spokesman about treated waste water, gave a slide presentation titled, “Recycled Wastewater: Risks, Hazards and Alternatives”, illustrating the results of his extensive research concerning emerging contaminants as related to artificial recharging of wastewater. The danger we are facing comes from trace amounts of pharmaceuticals for which no effective filter has been produced. When some drugs come into contact with each other, they can combine their molecules to produce yet another new, unidentified drug whose deliterious effects on the ecology are not known. To date these chemicals are unregulated and therefore wastewater treatment facilities are not legally bound to remove these contaminants from the effluent. While the effect on humans has not been fully studied, there have been many studies that have linked phamaceutical products in lakes containing estrogen to high rates of abnormalities in fish that live in the waters, such as cross gendering where male fish have morphed into females. Could this be one explanation for the gender inbalance in the human population? The bottom line is that we must proceed with extreme caution, give the scientific community the time to develop the filtering technologies to remove all traces of risky drugs from wastewater, let the regulatory process develop, and find alternative sources of drinking water. Thanks, Dan, for a fine presentation. It was a real service to the Big Bear Community. In the business meeting that followed the program, members of the club voted to endorse Pat Meagher for Congress, and Carl Wood for State Assembly. Each candidate received more than the required 70% vote to receive the endorsement. Senator Barack Obama also won the club's endorsement but did not receive the 70% majority vote. Sandi and Bob Ybarra, and Deborah Smith are hosting a "Meet Pat Meagher" event in Sugarloaf Park on Saturday, May 24, from 1 to 3 p.m. This will be another opportunity for the Big Bear Community to meet the candidate, ask him questions, and hear him speak on many issues facing the Valley and the country. The Real John McCain Sunday 06 April 2008 - 02:09:38 Here are 10 things you should know about John McCain:
John McCain is not who the Washington press corps make him out to be. Please help get the word out! April Town Hall Meeting Friday 14 March 2008 - 02:38:08 The Big Bear Valley Democratic Club Held a Town Hall Meeting for the Democratic Candidates Running for Congress in the 41st Congressional District Pat Meagher from Forest Falls, Tim Prince from San Bernardino, and Rita Ramirez-Dean from 29 Palms captivated the audience's attention for over two hours as they fielded questions from a panel of journalists and politicians as well as from the audience. They discussed issues at the national and local levels. All agree the U.S. led invasion of Iraq was a tragic mistake that has cost the lives of over 4000 young Americans with tens of thousands wounded, some maimed for life, and well over a trillion dollars already drained from the nation's financial resources. Each candidate supports aplan to begin immediate withdrawal while doing whatever necessary to prevent more shedding of blood. Pat Meagher said "we support our troops, but it's the wrong mission." On pork barrel spending, all support reducing ear marked legislation that benefits only a select few or those designed to enhance the reputation of the congressman involved. Mr. Prince and Mr. Meagher place global warming as the number one challenge to resolve while Rita Ramirez-Dean places it right behind education which she believes is the first priority that takes precedence over all the others. All three candidates are fully committed to securing a victory over the incumbent, Jerrry Lewis, in the Genral Election in November. But first one of them must emerge triumphant in the June Primary Election. March Meeting Thursday 28 February 2008 - 13:21:00 MARCH MADNESS IS UPON US The month of March always brings with it the official end of winter, the beginning of spring, the exciting culmination of the NCAA basketball season, and probably this year for the first time in recent memory, the end of the primary races for the White House. John McCain all but has the Republican Party normination in the bag, and for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, the remaining primary elections scheduled for March and early April will undoubtedly determine the winner of the Democratic Party nomination. The Big Bear Valley Democratic Club meeting in March falls on the same day, Tuesday, March 4, as the Primary Election in two crucial states, Ohio and Texas, where the popular vote and the delegate count could very well push Barack Obama toward an insummountable lead. At the club meeting on Tuesday, we will present the case for Barack Obama for President, as well as hear talking points for candidates for other offices, such as Pat Meagher for Congress in the California 41st Congressional District. That's Tuesday, March 4th, at 6:30 in the BBARWA Meeting Hall, where politics are as lively and relevant as they are in Ohio and Texas. |
